Dr Errol Chan is the Medical Director and Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at Ascend Eye Clinic. His practice spans a wide range of eye conditions, with particular interests in cataract and refractive surgery, vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina and uveitis.
With experience across more than 10,000 procedures, Dr Chan brings together broad surgical experience and subspecialty expertise in managing both routine and complex eye conditions. His approach centres on careful assessment, thoughtful clinical decision-making and care tailored to each patient’s condition, visual needs and lifestyle.
Dr Chan’s training has taken him through leading ophthalmic institutions in Singapore, Canada, and the United Kingdom. After graduating from the National University of Singapore in 2007, where he was placed on the Dean’s List, he completed his specialist training in Ophthalmology within the National University Health System and obtained his Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology from the National University of Singapore.
He subsequently pursued advanced subspecialty training in vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina, and uveitis. He was awarded a scholarship by the Retina Foundation of Canada to undertake a Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship at McGill University, before continuing his fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, one of the world’s most established specialist eye hospitals.
During this period, Dr Chan trained under internationally recognised ophthalmologists including Professors David Charteris, James Bainbridge, Lyndon da Cruz, John Chen and Michael Kapusta. This experience further developed his expertise in the medical and surgical management of retinal and vitreous disease, including retinal detachment, macular disorders, diabetic eye disease and complex vitreoretinal conditions. He also gained experience in laser vision correction and refractive surgery at Optegra Eye Hospital in London.
His specialist training is complemented by Fellowship qualifications from the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Dr Chan went on to practise within the United Kingdom National Health Service as a Consultant Ophthalmologist as well as a Cataract and Vitreoretinal Surgeon, managing patients across cataract surgery, retinal surgery, medical retinal disease and ocular inflammation. He has also served as a Visiting Consultant at the National University Hospital in Singapore.
This combination of international fellowship training, consultant-level experience and a broad surgical practice allows Dr Chan to care for patients across different stages of eye disease, from common eye conditions to complex cases requiring specialised medical or surgical care. His focus remains on providing a clear professional medical opinion and customised treatment for the individual patient.

Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Chan has built a strong academic profile through ongoing involvement in ophthalmic research, education and professional development. He has published more than 40 articles and book chapters covering areas such as vitreoretinal surgery, retinal vascular disease, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, uveitis, intraocular lens surgery and ophthalmic imaging. He has also participated as an investigator in clinical trials evaluating treatments for eye diseases, contributing to the wider understanding and development of eye care.
His experience has also extended into medical education and research. Dr Chan has served as a Clinical Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and as an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Singapore Eye Research Institute, reflecting his continued involvement in both the training of future doctors and academic ophthalmology.
Dr Chan’s work has received recognition from organisations including the World Glaucoma Association and the Asia-Pacific Vitreoretinal Society. He has also been invited to speak and participate in expert panels at local, regional and international ophthalmology meetings, where he has shared his experience across retinal disease, cataract surgery and other areas of eye care.
His professional involvement extends across several major international ophthalmic organisations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the Vitrectomy Buckle Society. His clinical work and perspectives on eye health have also been featured in Singapore media, including The Straits Times and CNA938.
